Everyone on Cannery Row is friendly and likes the main character Doc because he always tries to help everyone. However, each character manages to obtain satisfaction from what little they have. Therefore, it may be quite difficult for them to achieve happiness due to constant struggles. As the scene is set in the 1920s during the Great Depression, it is evident that the population of the Row is mostly poor.
